Established in the 5th century, and holds approximately 1,600 years of history.
Traditionally it is hereditary, and family lineage is greatly considered in succession. However due to a shortage of successors in recent years, the school has received new students universally. Currently the use of magic requires national qualifications, and at Luna Nova there are various subjects specialized for acquiring them and for joining various agencies that put to service one’s qualifications. By custom of mages, there are those who learn magic solely for the sake of the art, but there are many students of witch families who enter with little sense of purpose.

—Description of Luna Nova from Witchpedia[1]

The Luna Nova Magical Academy (ルーナノヴァ魔法学校 Ruuna Nova Mahou Gakkou?), also known as Luna Nova Witchcraft Academy, or simply called Luna Nova Academy, is the most prestigious witch academy in all of Europe.

Description

Luna Nova's Insignia LWA

Luna Nova's Symbol

The Luna Nova Magical Academy is a renowned school dedicated to teaching young witches the art of magic. Initially, only witches from magical families were admitted, but due to economic difficulties, it was decided to also allow the entrance to witches without magical inheritance. The students are divided into teams of three, giving each team the same room along with a hatband and sash of the same color for their uniform. These groups subsequently work together in the group lessons. Since the use of magic today is required for national qualifications, Luna Nova has various specialized subjects to acquire said qualifications, and after graduation, it offers various jobs that can use magic.[2][3]

The academy is located above a Ley Line argued by Alfred Watkins, called the St. Michael's Ley Line[4] and the school has its own Ley Line Terminal that facilitates the entrance and exit of the school through the Ley Line to the town of Glastonbury. The campus consists of the main hall, which is a large castle located next to the New Moon Tower, where the Sorcerer's Stone is located, which absorbs the magical energy of the Ley Line and allows students and teachers to use their magic freely. Under the tower is a deep labyrinth where treasures and monsters are stored and under its chapel is the entrance to the Blue Moon Abyss. Croix's laboratory was later established in the tower. The outskirts of Luna Nova are surrounded by the Arcturus Forest and mountains.[5][6][4]

In addition to dormitories and classrooms, the campus features sands for sports and flying broom practices, a clock tower, a large lake, a botanical garden, a courtyard, a library, a cafeteria, an auditorium, an observation tower, an aviary, and a pet graveyard. There is also the entrance to the Fountain of Polaris, inside the north building.[7] The Luna Nova's Reference Archives are in an external section and a special permit is required for access.[8]

Lastly, the academy is built above a vast, labyrinth-like dungeons with the many secrets and treasures accessible through New Moon Tower. This is where young witches' skills and abilities being put into a test as they must retrieve treasures stored within and fighting creatures which infested the area along the way all under supervision of involved professors.[5][4]

History

Let this academy be the first milestone in restoring the art of witchcraft and all of its lost glory.

—Woodward declares the opening of Luna Nova during its opening year as written in Luna Nova's Brochure.[5]

Luna Nova Academy was founded in the 5th century by the great Nine Olde Witches and it has a history of about 1600 years. With the end of the Great Age of Magic, witches had lost their place in the world, but when the Nine Olde Witches managed to restore the glory of magic, they decided to create Luna Nova to return the witchcraft to its place of prestige. At its opening (year 420), there were around 100 students, which were guided by Woodward. The building was considered a masterpiece at that time. The Samhain Festival took place since the first year of opening.[9][10][5]

Since its foundation, Luna Nova Academy had faced trials and tribulations which included its transition from being a smaller, humbler school to the prestigious magical institution for witches everyone known today. The Academy's early iteration, which built at Blytonbury, was forced to be closed due to the ongoing Witch Hunts in 1512 and burnt down at the height of such event which occured in 1800s, with few parts of it such as auditorium survived the destruction. After such unfortunate turn of events, efforts made by Jennifer The Witch and Woodward saw its restoration at Arcturus Forest and subsequent reopening in 1743 as the first step in the new era of magic — the Golden Age of Magic — in which Luna Nova lived an era of glory. Around that time, the rebuilt Academy expanded further, attaining 72 lecture halls and therefore able to accommodate up to 1000 students. Luna Nova also survived at least one major incident around that time in form of the rampage of Ghost Witch, the monstrous alter-ego of one of the students who unwisely tampered Time Magic sealed within Horologium Chamber and corrupted by Curse of Time in the process before being sealed away as part of the procedure to restore her back to normal. Though the aforementioned curse resulted everyone involved in the incident no longer remembered it, records pertaining Ghost Witch's rampage thankfully survived and subsequently held crucial role for Akko and co. to finish what their predecessors started in saving the same student.[9][5][11][12]

In the present period of science and technology, witchcraft has ceased to be perceived as a practical art, and instead as a relic of the past doomed to obsolescence. Magic around the world continues to weaken, and the number of witches decreases more and more. This, of course, affected the school that it suffer economic difficulties to the point of it opened its door for first generation witches in recent years.[13][14] For a time, though, the academy managed to improve its condition upon the arrival of Croix Meridies who introduced Magitronics along with Modern Magic subject despite both opposition from traditionalistic professors and her own hidden agenda.[15][16] Fortunately, the school, along with witches and the rest of people of magical world, were saved from obsolescence thanks to the joint effort of Atsuko Kagari and her fellow New Nine Witches who harnessed the power of Grand Triskellion which, combined with humanity's believing hearts united to support the witches' success that became a new Yggdrasil, restoring the Cosmic Tree's infinite magic to the world.

As revealed during the events of the anime, Luna Nova needs better standards more than it let on which can only be achieved through reconciling old and new ways of magic. In addition of gradually perceived Vajarois as mere instrument of Samhain Festival[17] and overlooked the importance of understanding Dragonese[18], senior members of Luna Nova faculty, particularly those from older, conservative magical families such as Anne Finnelan and Samantha Badcock, were too focused in preserving traditions to the point of overlooking both well-being of others and changes around them, unknowingly contributed to very crisis they attempted to solve[19]. Moreover, their low opinions on Shiny Chariot's use of magic and Croix's magitronics were motivated by genuine bias rather than justified; they failed to understand the fact that Chariot intended to inspire people from start despite her methods left much to be desired throughout her celebrity career (using magic as part of her shows despite more subtle, better appreciated means to achieve such goal were available) and Croix's inventions can improve their way of utilizing magic energy along with their life standards. As such, the day when Akko and co. revived the Cosmic Tree Yggdrasil along with its infinite magic in the planet was not only the moment when the academy was spared from both obsolescence and further economic difficulties, but also the chance to improve itself.

Constanze's Fundamental Alchemy demonstration for the exam LWA 07

Constanze's Alchemy demonstration

Also known as Introduction to Alchemy, Fundamental Alchemy is a subject applied to the basics of alchemy, the ancient metaphysical science/mystical art of reforging raw materials into useful items. As the craft was only shown briefly in Orange Submariner, the information about it is limited until this point.

As demonstrated by Constanze, the known basic alchemy technique taught at Luna Nova is matter transmutation. Although such technique has similarities with that of Metamorphosis Magic (notably turning a target object into another) and even follows similar principles, matter transmutation is much more difficult to perform due to restrictions which referred as the Law of Equivalent Exchange: Any form the target object is turned into must have equal mass and shares same basic makeup and properties with those of its original state, restrictions which Metamorphosis Magic bypasses through utilized magic energy which either increases or reduces the mass of the target as well as completely altering its properties and basic makeup in accordance of the form the user wishes to at varying degree. Moreover, matter transmutation appears to require greater understanding of the fundamental structure of the target object than Metamorphosis Magic does (which includes the flow and balance of potential and kinetic energy within) given than object transformations via. latter technique is much easier to reverse, if not outright temporary. As such, the use of alchemy, even its basics, is arguably restricted on altering inanimate matter.

Physical Education Programs

In the same vein with mundane boarding schools, Luna Nova includes a couple of physical sports such as running [33], stretching, and volleyball (which seemed to be sparsely conducted compared to the rest given to faeries' unfamiliarity with it)[34]. This curriculum was included so as to hone its students' physical fitness thus allowing them to better handle the strain from performing certain magic such as Body Strengthening Magic and in lesser extent, Flight Magic.

School Life

Any witch from 13 to 16 years old is eligible to enter the academy. After receiving a letter of acceptance and a guide to the academy, students must present themselves at the entrance ceremony in a timely manner.[20]

The course in the academy begins in May ending in July the first semester. After the summer holidays in August, the second semester starts in September and ends in the holidays in December. The third semester takes place in January, being in February the final exams. The course finishes in March, taking place in April the spring break, lasted two weeks between the end of March and April. Two half-term breaks are given at the end of the second month of the first two semesters and one at the end of the first month of the third.

Classes start at 8:00 a.m., students have half an hour to prepare and one hour for breakfast. Morning classes last up to 70 minutes per subject, taking 4 to 5 subjects per day. Uniform

Students in the academy wear two types of uniforms. The uniform used in regular classes consists of a white long-sleeved shirt, a navy blue vest, a tie of the same color and a skirt. It also has a ribbon sash situated at the waist where the students carry their magic wands. In practical classes and school functions, students wear a uniform consisting of a long navy blue hooded tunic-styled robe with a hidden pocket in each sleeve, a pointed hat, stockings, and long boots along with the same ribbon sash. Each student's sash and band on their pointy boots and hat are colored in accordance to the group of three they belong to. When they are out of school, students wear a buttoned jacket covered with a cape. Although uniformity among students is essential, diverse hairstyle and accessory among them as expected from their age seemed to be tolerable.[36][40][41]

The teachers wear a uniform consisting in a dark violet hooded dress reaching to her knees with long wide sleeves, a red flame-like design in the bottom, a brown belt, knee boots with a deep dip and red tips and a dark purple witch hat with a a golden crescent-shaped object and decorated with feathers hose quantity varies according to the rank that has said professor (the headmaster has three, senior teachers have two and the rest have one).[42][43][44] Much like students themselves, the professors are allowed to customize their appearance to some degree, in some cases provide hint to their country of origin.[45][46]

Luna Nova Clubs

As with other boarding schools mundane and magical alike, Luna Nova has established its own academy clubs. Its notable clubs are Luna Nova News Network dedicated to cover all the important news and events in Luna Nova and publish them in the school newspaper, Pixie Cut Power that consisted of short-haired students, and a number of fan clubs dedicated for its latest top student Diana Cavendish, which may very well unofficial unlike the former two.[47]

Magical Creatures

The janitors of Luna Nova, responsible for sanitation and setting tables for meals within the school. There are many different kinds of orderlies that work at Luna Nova.

—Description of Goblin Janitors from Witchpedia.[48]

Luna Nova also employs magical creatures of different types as part of its staff where they assume non-teaching roles. Large and strong ones such as cyclops are usually in charge of gatekeeping duty. Goblins cleaning, laundry, and provide meals for students. Their smaller co-workers such as winged goblins assume chef assistant. Based on observations though, they are no slouch in other duties such as construction of newer parts of the academy. These creatures are distinguished by their orange uniform and caps which emblazoned with Luna Nova's insignia.[49][50]

As with common magical creatures, they require magical energy sustenance to even move, so they are given 10% of the energy of the Sorcerer's Stone which eventually led the magical creatures to go on strike for a fairer share of energy until they finally reached an agreement.

Following magical creatures who confirmed to work as Luna Nova custodians are:

Other magical creatures that live at the school:

Professor Pisces, as a sapient goldfish, is also a sort of magical creature.

Etymology

In Latin, Luna Nova translates to "New Moon", the first phase of the moon. At least in anime TV Series canon, this may very well reflected Woodward's desire to establish the new era of magic.[62][63]

Trivia

  • At the moment of the series, the number of students in the academy was about 150 people, with only 24 students studying in the master's course.[40]
  • Luna Nova's students are all female.
  • According to Yoshinari and his fellow animators in the booklet that came with the first film's Blu-ray release Luna Nova is supposedly located in a realm/dimension separate from Earth and that magic in the realm/dimension in question is much more abundant than in former — this means witches must store some power from said realm so as to be able to use magic on earth albeit in limited capacity.[64]
    • This proposal eventually subtly adapted into the franchise's anime TV Series continuity judging from the characters' frequent usage of Ley Line Terminals in order to reach and depart from the school with exception of Diana-centered two-parter episodes "Cavendish" and "Intelligence and Sensibility" in which Diana seemingly not using any of said Terminals during her brief drop-out and eventual return (it's possible that she actually used a terminal that situated a distance away from the school albeit not shown due to two-parter episodes' time constraints).
      • That being said, Luna Nova's dimension could be part of Earth's own in some form since they share the same moon (the moon's four-pointer crater can be seen from Luna Nova despite the fact that Chariot's overpowered Shiny Arc which created it was fired from her stage on Earth) and one can see Big Dipper shining on both dimensions' night skies.
      • Though not 100% accurate, fansub version of the scene where Barbara voices the urgency to arrive in time for Luna Nova's opening ceremony further confirms that Luna Nova is indeed situated in a magic realm which closely linked to Earth with Ley Lines, an idea which previously discussed by Yoshinari and his fellow animators in the booklet that came with the first film's Blu-ray. Regrettably, such part of translation was lost during dubbing process by Netflix which simplified Barbara's line in the same scene into following, "If you're late to the opening ceremony, you'll be banned from ever attending Luna Nova."
        • Keisuke Satō manga adaptation of the scene rectified this by providing more accurate English translation of Barbara's aforementioned line which close to fan translation all along. Here, she says "If we're late to the entrance ceremony, we'll be exiled from the magic realm!". On a related not, the manga also has Akko mentioned 'magic world' in the middle of her rants as she shows Sucy one of her Chariot card, which alludes either magic realm in which Luna Nova situated at, magic community as whole, or both.
    • In addition of Arcturus Forest and possibly Doras Hill, other locations which may very well situated in the same alternate dimension as Luna Nova are Canopus Ruins, Mimosa Forest, Mountain Ankaa, Regulus Mines, Shaula Desert, Gienah Tundra, and Labyrinth of Pollux.

  • According Naoko Tsutsumi, Luna Nova is not the only magic school that still extant by the time the series take place.[65]
    • On a related note, Akko is not sole first generation witch who attended Luna Nova, but nevertheless the latest known instance since others like her was not featured yet until this point.
    • The concept of magic schools beside Luna Nova already explored in Midnight Crown manga which set in its own continuity where it featured Sorbates Academy as Luna Nova's rival in the latest academic competition event.[66]
  • According to Yusuke Yoshigaki in his Twitter post in January 2, 2023, elves were considered to be among magical creatures who work as Luna Nova's faery custodians before being replaced with kangaroo-rabbits.[67][68]
  • As noted by fans, two statues adorning the courtyard of Luna Nova — one of which Akko attempted to bewitch via. Shiny Rod in "Pappiliodya" — are those of Hecate the Greek Goddess of Witchcraft and Necromancy, which fitting considering the academy being where young witches learned magic.[69][70]
    • A similar statue can be found in the academy's old chapel right near the large patch of tiled floor which concealed the entrance of Blue Moon Abyss. It's ambiguous whether it was intentional as additional clue for the location of entrance in question.
    • Comparison between Luna Nova Main Gate's Virgin Mary statues and Virgin Mary Statue at outside the Pfarrkirche St

Comparison between Luna Nova Main Gate's Virgin Mary statues and Virgin Mary Statue at outside the Pfarrkirche St. Alban in Matrei in Osttirol, Austria, which erroneusly added into the game

Two of Hecate statues also adorned the main gate of Luna Nova in addition of large lamps to illuminate the area during night time. However, they are replaced by Virgin Mary statues which design-wise similar to the one outside the Pfarrkirche St. Alban in Matrei in Osttirol, Austria in Chamber of Time.
      • As the game revealed to be not completely finalized due to time constraints which made it impossible for Bandai Namco to properly incorporate every ideas prior to the deadline, this should be count as an error as opposed of retcon.[71]
  • Unlike students who predominantly utilize standard-issue magic brooms and provided with one should she lacks any, majorities of the professors of Luna Nova, including the headmistress, utilize custom-made magic brooms.[72][73]
  • Luna Nova has several ancient magic mirrors which need to be applied with fairy dust in order to keep their inhabiting faeries appeased or else they will cause mischief on those who gaze upon them.[74][75] The only known instance of them causing harm being when one of them forcibly turned Akko into Diana's likeness, but even that was because of Woodward's reprehensible approach in causing Akko to realize she should focus on her own strengths.
  • Luna Nova's cafeteria has up to 20 tables each with 4 chairs.[58]
